FULL IMMERSION

The international competition and special programs will be complemented by screenings of full-length films, both animated documentaries, as well as documentaries with animated sequences, dealing with very important creators or events.

So each time it will be a kind of "full immersion" in the topic.

1970

In 1970, protests broke out in several coastal cities in Communist Poland. Workers went on strikes to object to price increases. Growing numbers of protesters walked out onto the streets. As the situation became tense, a crisis team gathered in the capital.

With the help of animations combined with telephone recordings, we can peek behind the closed doors of dignitaries’ offices. Hundreds of cigarettes are smoked. Conversations get cut off. Strategies to break up protesters and future repressions are planned. Propaganda activities are thought up. However, the protests get out of control. We can witness the fear, confusion, and brutality of the decision-makers. The militia makes use of their batons. Shots are fired and people die. Our film “1970” is a story about a rebellion but told from the perspective of the oppressors.

Jonas Poher Rasmussen

FLEE

In FLEE, the Grand Jury Prize winner at this year’s Sundance Festival, filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen tells a poignant story of belonging and the search for identity. Amin’s life has been defined by his past and a secret he’s kept for over 20 years. Forced to leave his home country of Afghanistan as a young child with his mother and siblings, Amin now grapples with how his past will affect his future in Denmark and the life he is building with his soon-to-be husband. Told brilliantly through the use of animation to protect his identity, Amin looks back over his life, opening up for the first time about his past, his trauma, the truth about his family, and his acceptance of his own sexuality.

THEMERSON & THEMERSON

She was a dreamer, he was a thinker. He had a question, She was the answer. Two people, once met and created the poetry of life, inspired generations of artists in Europe, Roman Polanski was one of them.

Franciszka and Stefan Themerson lived and worked together over sixty years first in Poland, France, England. It’s well hidden treasure in the culture and art of the XX century. Though they don’t remember how they met, they made films together. Her lines often gave life to his imagination. Their unusual love story is the backdrop to the art and story of these two exceptional citizens of the world.

THE BUG TRAINER

The Bug Trainer is an international co-production documentary film about Ladislas Starewitch (1882 - 1965), a pioneer of puppet animation and a contemporary of cinematography, one of the most mystique and controversial creators of 20th century. He was named as a true Wizard and an Alchemist of animation, whose wizardry was born in Lithuania in the beginning of 20th century. He got his fame in Russia and flourished in his full power in France. Unique methods of animation, never disclosed to the others, - who was he?

Lithuania, Poland, Russia, France - all claim him as "Ours". It seems that he was a cosmopolitan, whose creative works overpass geographical boarders and are ahead of the time.

This film is an effort to "decode" Starewitch by using the means of his own artistic thinking, utilizing all the contemporary means of pictorial expression and tiding together the biographical facts, archives and factual information told by experts: cinema historians, critics, animators told through the animated love story of puppets.
